Both men and women seek laser hair removal services to have unwanted hair removed. Hair removal is commonly done on the upper lip, chin, sideburns and various other body parts.
IPL uses a spectrum of multiple wavelengths of light energy to target, heat and destroy its target. IPL targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle, therefore the darker the hair the more heat that is generated and the easier it is to destroy the hair follicle. IPL hair removal treatments work best on individuals with light skin and dark hair. Brown and black hair are ideal; blonde, red, white or grey hair are not good candidates for hair removal treatments as these hair colours do not contain much melanin. Also, darker skin colour means that the melanin in the skin will absorb a lot of the energy of the IPL instead of the hair follicle making it more difficult to eliminate the hair.
IPL hair removal is accomplished in a series of sessions generally done every 4-12 weeks depending on the area of the body being treated. The average number of sessions to achieve over 80 percent permanent hair reduction in 80-90 percent of good candidates is approximately 4 to 8 sessions. Darker skin colour and lighter hair colours will require more treatments.
There are three phases of hair growth, Anagen, Telogen and Catagen. It is during the active growth phase (Anagen) that there is enough melanin in the hair bulb to destroy it. Therefore, only about one third of the hair follicles are ever in the active growth phase at any one time and thus able to be targeted by the IPL. This is why multiple treatments are required. Multiple treatments ensure that all the hairs are subjected to the treatment. These hairs may be shaved by the patient between sessions if desired.
Some maintenance sessions may be required annually. Many patients find that maintenance sessions done once or twice a year are ideal for keeping hair at bay after completing the initial treatment protocol. In a minority of patients who are good candidates hair loss may only be temporary and complete re-growth may occur. Re-growth is often finer in texture and lighter in colour due to the damage to the hair follicle. IPL hair removal treatments cannot be performed on individuals with tanned skin or very dark skin (types 5 & 6).
